Lake Baldeney

Distance from our location: 8 km

The Lake Baldeney is an artificial lake created in 1931, intentionally as a water reserve, is now a popular destination for all kinds of activities inside and outside of the water. Even though swimming is not allowed, the choices of activities seem endless. Watersports, including rowing, sailing, kayaking and even surfing, as well as activities on the shore, like hiking or biking the 14,7 km around the lake are just some of the activities. Hiking trails, like the ‘Baldeneysteig’ that is around 27 km long, guide visitors through the forests along the shores of the lake and impress with beautiful views of the lake and the surrounding hills.

Once every year, the German sailing elite meets in Essen for the spectacular ‘Essener Week’, Germany’s biggest inland lake regatta. There are also activities for less athletic people, like cruises around the lake with the ‘White Fleet’. The afore mentioned mansion ‘Villa Hügel’ is located in close proximity of the lake.
