Collieries belong to the most characteristic landmarks that are unique to the Ruhrgebiet. Actively used to mine coal from 1851 until 1986, the colliery ‘Zollverein’ is now an architectural landmark commemorating the German Industrial Period. Alongside with the near coking plant, shafts 12 and 1/2/8 of the colliery ‘Zollverein’ were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 and the colliery is also one of the anchor points of the European Route of Industrial Heritage. Since the final cessation in 1986, the buildings host the ‘Folkwang’ University of Arts, as well as other cultural organisations. Due to the architectural characteristics of the towers, they received the nickname ‘Eiffel Tower of the Ruhrgebiet’.
